“I really admire how Casio reaches out to teachers to help foster math education and make the classroom experience more effective and rewarding,” said McKellar. “My keynote focuses the importance of making math fun, relevant, and meaningful – in part by engaging students in explorations that challenge and inspire them to go deeper.”

McKellar’s keynote will highlight the methods she has employed in her bestselling math books, as well as how to apply Casio’s technology to improve the experience of math education. She will also touch upon how the new Standards for Mathematical Practice embrace how students learn naturally, which is seen in how kids approach learning a new game or device: they explore, engage, use appropriate tools, and persevere in problem solving naturally.

“Math is seen as 'too hard or intimidating, and my passion in writing my books has always been to present math as a fun challenge, and help kids enjoy the feeling of being smart by studying math. Exploring math through the projects suggested in Casio's 'Fostering Mathematics' series aligns with those goals” said McKellar.

McKellar studied mathematics and graduated with highest honors from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She has been honored in Britain’s esteemed Journal of Physics and for her work in mathematics, most notably for her role as co-author of a ground-breaking mathematical physics theorem called The Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem.
