New fx-55 PLUS Provides Teachers with a Tool to Help Foster a Deeper Understanding of Mathematics

DOVER, NJ (April 25, 2012) — Now more than ever, mathematics, with a raised expectation of teachers and students, is one of the more challenging subjects. With the implementation of the Common Core Standards (CCS) for grades K – 12, Casio America, Inc. has created a tool that will enable teachers to foster a deeper understanding of mathematics. Casio America, Inc. is proud to introduce a new model to its portfolio of calculators – the fx-55 PLUS. Casio’s fx-55 PLUS has been designed to appeal to the elementary grade level student as it can display fractions in natural form for extensive fraction exploration. The fx-55 PLUS also allows students the ability to calculate time and percents. The fx-55 PLUS, the fx-300ES PLUS and the fx-115ES PLUS will all debut at Casio’s booth #316 at the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA, April 25-28, 2012.

CASIO Calculator fx-55 PLUSDesigned for third through sixth grade math classes, the fx-55 PLUS will help students grasp difficult concepts and transition effortlessly to higher levels of mathematics. With the emphasis of STEM in the classroom, Casio’s fx-55 PLUS makes it easier to begin exploring complex Science and Math concepts in the younger grades. With large, color coded buttons (i.e. green for fractions, white for numbers, blue for operations, etc.), students will adapt to the technology with ease and be able to conceptualize connections across multiple mathematics topics to prepare students for success in Algebra I and beyond.

“The fx-55 PLUS is a beautifully designed tool to help transition students to higher levels of math and foster the use of calculators as an essential piece of technology. Entering Algebra I with a firm grasp of fundamental algebraic concepts is essential to graduation and Casio is proud to help be a part of that process” said Amber Branch, National Director of Casio’s Consumer Products Division. “All of the functions and buttons found on the fx-55 PLUS are found in Casio’s entire portfolio of calculators, allowing students to spend more time learning and applying mathematics instead of memorizing operational keystrokes.”

In the classroom, the fx-55 PLUS helps foster students’ number sense to self-check their thought process as well as calculations performed. With a variety of intuitive functions, the fx-55 PLUS features division with remainders, percent conversions, random integer generation, fraction simplification, easy fraction/decimal conversion and time calculation (i.e. minutes to hours and elapsed/predictive time).

“At Casio, we are always working to develop new technologies that benefit both students and teachers. We understand that calculators are merely tools to orchestrate good instruction. The teacher is vital in using any technology. This is why the fx-55 PLUS is great for students, but even better for teachers, as it is simple to incorporate into the classroom & curriculum,” said Branch. “Well-designed inquiry lessons help students to discover patterns that are at the heart of algebraic thinking. As with our entire line-up, we offer online and in-person training, utilizing a variety of materials. The aim is to help teachers build their lesson plans in order to create dynamic math lessons and build conceptual understanding.”

In addition to the introduction of the fx-55 PLUS, Casio will also be showcasing 2 upgraded scientific calculators, the fx-300ES PLUS and the fx-115ES PLUS. All three scientific calculators offer features and functionality tailored to the end-user. Whether it is the first color, LCD graphing calculator or the first natural display fraction calculator – Casio continues to develop and offer a comprehensive set of solutions for the education market. The fx-55 PLUS will be available to educators through education channels for an MSRP of $12.99.

The fx-300ES PLUS will be available at mass retailer channels or office super stores for an MSRP of $12.99 and the fx-115ES PLUS will be available at mass retailer channels or office super stores for $17.99.
