Casio Provides Moflin Smart Companions to Pediatric Ward at The Jikei University Hospital

Launches New Initiative to Support Children in Sterile Isolation Rooms

April 9, 2026

TOKYO, April 9, 2026 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today that it began providing Moflin smart companions on February 9, 2026, to the pediatric ward at The Jikei University Hospital, in cooperation with the Department of Pediatrics, The Jikei University School of Medicine (Professor Kimihiko Oishi). The initiative is designed to bring comfort to children staying in protective isolation rooms, such as those used during treatments including bone marrow transplantation, and to help create a supportive environment that eases their daily anxiety and stress in collaboration with medical staff.

Driven by its Purpose — “Through the power to put wonder at hand, bring new levels of joy to lives one by one” — Casio continues to create new value the world has never seen before. Moflin is a smart companion that develops emotional responses through interaction, offering a comforting presence that enriches the daily lives of its owners.

For children staying in protective isolation rooms, contact with people and objects is often restricted as part of infection-control measures. As a result, many children experience significant emotional stress in addition to the challenges of medical treatment. At the same time, there are practical limits to how much time medical staff can devote to providing emotional support. Against this backdrop, the initiative was developed to introduce a gentle presence into the hospital room — something distinct from medical treatment — that may help support children throughout their hospital stay.

The Moflin smart companions provided are used as part of the pediatric ward’s care program. Moflin is intended to serve as a companion that children can touch, talk to, and gradually become attached to, complementing the care provided by medical staff. This marks the first use of Moflin in a pediatric ward, particularly in protective isolation rooms.
Casio will carefully assess — through interviews and other methods — how the presence of Moflin affects the emotional well-being of children and their families, while continuing to explore effective ways to integrate Moflin into clinical settings. Working in partnership with the Department of Pediatrics at The Jikei University School of Medicine, Casio will examine approaches that can be appropriately introduced into medical environments.

Going forward, Casio will continue expanding the use of Moflin in the mental wellness field, including medical settings, while evaluating its impact, with the aim of addressing social challenges through the comfort and emotional support that companionship can provide.

■Comment from Professor Kimihiko Oishi
Department of Pediatrics, The Jikei University School of Medicine
Medicine is not only about treatment outcomes. For children who must spend long periods in the hospital, often under strict environmental restrictions, how they spend their time and how they feel during that time are just as important as the treatment itself.

In protective isolation rooms, there are inevitably moments when medical staff cannot fully provide the emotional support that children may need, even when we wish we could. This initiative is an attempt to place a gentle presence in the hospital room—something a little different from medical care—that may help fill those moments.

Moflin does not need to do anything extraordinary. If simply being beside the children can create small moments of comfort or help them relax, even briefly, during their hospital stay, that alone would be meaningful.

At the Department of Pediatrics at The Jikei University School of Medicine, we have long recognized that medical professionals alone cannot fully support children in these situations. We have continued to explore, within the clinical setting, what forms of support might truly help. This initiative is part of that ongoing effort. By listening carefully to the children's responses and the voices of their families, we hope to nurture this initiative so that it may gradually become a natural part of care in the clinical setting.

■Comment from Ryoichi Furukawa, Deputy Senior General Manager, Sound and New Business Division, Casio Computer Co., Ltd.
With the launch of the Moflin smart companion, Casio has entered the mental wellness field. Beginning with its adoption by The Jikei University Hospital, we will explore the potential of interaction with Moflin as a form of mental care and aim to contribute further to addressing social challenges.

About the Smart Companion Moflin
Moflin is a smart companion designed to form deeper bonds with its owner. It recognizes as its owner the person who interacts with it most frequently, and learns which gestures its owner prefers based on expressions of affection such as petting or hugging, gradually performing them autonomously. Its personality develops depending on how it is raised, with more than 4 million possible emotional profiles, making each Moflin truly unique.

The more love an owner gives, the more Moflin responds with special gestures and adorable sounds reserved just for them. Combined with its irresistibly soft, fluffy appearance, Moflin brings comfort and emotional warmth to everyday life.
