Arizona's Academic Standards Assessment (AASA)

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System

A student taking the CAST can access to the embedded calculator during the entire test. The calculator that appears in the test delivery system is assigned on the basis of the student's grade level. The student can resize and reposition the calculator on the screen as needed.

Connecticut

PARCC Assessments

No calculators with Computer Algebra System (CAS) features are allowed. No tablet, laptop (or PDA), or phone-based calculators are allowed during PARCC assessments. Students are not allowed to share calculators within a testing session. Test administrators must confirm that memory on all calculators has been cleared before and after the testing sessions. Calculators with “QWERTY” keyboards are not permitted.

Florida Standards Assessment (FSA)

Online scientific calculator provided in the computer-based testing (CBT) platform for Sessions 2 and 3 of the Grades 7 and 8 FSA Mathematics tests. Online calculator may be accessed in the FSA Portal for use in the classroom. CBT students may request and use an approved handheld scientific calculator during Sessions 2 and 3. Students with paper-based accommodations must be provided an approved handheld scientific calculator for Sessions 2 and 3.

ISAT Comprehensive Assessment System

Grades 3 - 8

Students in grades 4 - 8 are allowed the use of a calculator on all portions of the mathematics test. Grade 3 students with IEPs or Section 504 Plans may use calculators if it is an accommodation written into the IEP or Section 504 Plan. Acceptable calculators include four-function, scientific, or graphing calculators, as long as the calculator does not have any of the prohibited features.

The following features are prohibited: calculators built into mobile phones, handheld/laptop/tablet computers, calculators built into devices that have wireless communication capability, calculators with USB ports or cables, calculators with a QWERTY keyboard, calculators with CAS technology, pocket organizers, pen-input devices, calculators that make noise, calculators with power cords, or any electronic device that has scanning or camera functions.

Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP)

Grades 3 - 11

For students taking the online ISASP Mathematics and Science assessments, a calculator is provided as a tool within the TestNav 8 testing engine. Students taking either the paper or online ISASP are permitted to use locally approved (i.e., district approved) calculators.

No smartphone/smart watch/tablet/computer apps, devices where notes or programs can be typed or stored, devices where pictures can be stored, devices with cameras, or devices with internet access. These devices are prohibited while taking all ISASP assessments. No calculators with Computer Algebra System (CAS) capabilities. No calculators with QWERTY format letter keys.

Kansas Assessment Program (KAP)

No calculators permitted for grades 3 - 5. Grades 6 - 8 will have a basic four function calculator and a scientific calculator available to them through KITE, or students can use their own handheld calculators. Grade 10 will have a basic four function calculator and a graphing calculator available to them through KITE, or students can use their own handheld calculators

Kentucky

Kentucky Summative Assessments

Grades 3 - 5; 6 - 8; high school

An online calculator is provided; handheld can be used for paper based testing or special accommodations. Elementary (3 - 5) grades will have access to the four-function calculator; Middle (6 - 8) grades will have access to the scientific calculator; and High (10, 11) grades will have access to the graphing calculator for the Reading, Writing, Math, and Social Studies assessments.

Paper based testing or special accomodations: Students may use any four-function, scientific or graphing calculator, if: It is not on the list of Prohibited Calculators. All applications, programs and documents have been removed or deactivated as described in the Prohibited Computer Applications, Programs and Documents section. Proctors have made necessary modifications based on the Calculators Permitted with Modification section.

Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP)

Maine Comprehensive Assessment System (MECAS (using NWEA MAP))

Grades 3 - 8 and high school

As of October 2018, MAP Growth tests use an online four function and scientific calculator. Currently there are no items in any MAP tests that require use of a graphing calculator. There are no posted accomodations for paper-based testing.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS)

Grades 7, 8, 10

Students taking the grades 7, 8 and 10 paper-based tests must have sole access to a handheld calculator. The department strongly recommends using handheld calculators that are equivalent to the calculator types embedded in the computer-based testing platform. At a minimum, schools should provide a five-function calculator for students in grades 7, 8 and 10. Students may also use their own handheld calculator, including a graphing calculator.

Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP)

Grades 3 - 5, 6 - 7, 8, and Algebra I, II, and Geometry

A grade/course appropriate calculator will be provided through the computer-based delivery system for the MCAP Mathematics Assessments for grades 3 - 8 and Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II on items that allow the use of a calculator.

Michigan

Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP)

Grades 3 - 7, 11

No calculators are permitted for grades 3 - 5. Grades 6 and 7 mathematics and grades 5, 8, and 11 science assessments, students will use the calculator embedded within the online delivery engine (basic, scientific). For paper delivery: all programmable calculators must be set to TEST mode during the testing session for both mathematics and science assessments. Types of hand-held calculators: Basic calculator - science grade 5 and mathematics grade 6 and Scientific calculator - science grades 8 and 11 and mathematics grade 7.

Minnesota

Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs)

Grades 3 - 8, 11

Calculators may be used to answer items when a calculator is allowed. Students with memory-enabled calculators are not allowed to bring stored examples into the test session, access programs during testing, or store the test questions afterwards. For this reason, a graphing calculator must either: 1. Have its memory cleared both before and after each test session, or 2. Have a feature that temporarily disables all flash applications and calculator files.

Handheld calculators can be used on the Paper Grade 3-8 Mathematics MCA, Online Grade 11 Mathematics MCA, Paper Grade 11 Mathematics MA, Paper Science MCA (on allowed items), and the Mathematics and Science MTAS.

Handheld calculators may be permitted on Online Grade 3-8 Mathematics MCA if an IEP or 504 plan states that a handheld calculator must be used.

Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment System (NSCAS)

No calculator is permitted for grades 3 - 5. A four-function calculator is recommended for grade 6 examination. A scientific calculator is recommended for grades 7 - 8 examination. Calculators may not have a built-in or downloaded Computer Algebra System (CAS), must not be programmable or have graphing capabilities, or have access to the internet. A permitted calculator may only be used on the calculator section (Part 1) of the paper/pencil version of the NSCAS Summative Mathematics for grades 6, 7, and 8.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire Statewide Assessment System (NH SAS)

Grades 3 - 8, high school

An embedded on-screen digital calculator can be accessed for calculator-allowed items when students click on the calculator button. This tool is available only with specific test items. Accomodations are arranged based on individual test takers' IEP or 504 plan prior to the examination date.

New Jersey

NJ Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA)

Grades 3 - 8

Grades 3—5 do not have any calculator sections or units in the mathematics assessment. In grades 6, 7, high school end-of course, and NJGPA, one of the mathematics units is split into two sections: a non-calculator section and a calculator section. The other units permit calculator usage throughout the entire unit. In grade 8 mathematics, calculators are not allowed in the first unit, but the remaining unit permits calculator usage throughout the entire unit. In science, all units permit calculator usage.

  • Grades 6–7: Four-function calculators with square root and percentage functions
  • Grade 8: scientific calculators
  • High School End-of-Course and NJGPA: graphing calculators

HS - Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II

The calculator must not make use of a Computer Algebra System (CAS). These calculators are capable of doing symbolic algebra or symbolic calculus. The calculator must not have measuring capabilities (e.g., segment lengths and area of polygons), perform transformations, or be able to make geometric constructions. Students may not use calculators that can communicate through infrared sensors, nor may students use operating manuals, instruction or formula cards, or other information concerning the operation of calculators.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA)

The following are not permitted for the PSSA or Keystone Exams:

  1. Devices that have a primary purpose other than functioning as a calculator such as cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, PDAs, laptops, tablets, pocket organizers, etc.
  2. Calculators with infrared, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other beaming or wireless capabilities, unless the beaming or wireless capabilities are disabled
  3. Calculators with built-in Computer Algebra Systems (CAS)
  4. Calculators that make noise, have paper tape, need to be plugged in, or talk; these specific calculators can only be used as a required accommodation as stated in the Accommodations Guidelines
  5. Calculators shared by students during a test session
  6. Any and all non-factory (add-on) programs or information stored in the calculator

Grade 6 students may use a four-function or scientific calculator during the SC READY mathematics calculator section or SCPASS science test. For SCPASS, all calculations are easily computed with a basic four-function calculator. Grades 7 and 8 students may use a scientific calculator or one of the graphing calculators listed below during the SC READY mathematics section after following the “Procedures for Using Hand-held Calculators” below. Graphing: A graphing calculator most closely matches the functionality of the online tool. Calculators must not have a Computer Algebra System.

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR)

Grades 3-12 - Calculators are required for the following State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) tests: grade 8 mathematics, grade 8 science, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Biology. Calculators are not permitted for students taking the STAAR grades 3–7 mathematics assessments or the STAAR grade 5 science assessment unless the student meets the eligibility criteria.

Students are able to use an online calculator for some grades and subjects of the RISE Assessments as an alternative to handheld calculators, as allowed by the Utah State Board of Education. As of 2016, calculators are embedded within RISE assessments.
