How to Choose the Best Piano for Beginners

There are some important things to consider when zeroing in on the best beginner keyboard. Maybe you already have a few of these in mind:

Budget

Whether you’re a parent of a beginner or you’re testing your own musical abilities, cost is always a concern. Making this part of the journey easy has always been and will remain central to Casio’s mission. Music is for us all. That includes you, your kids, your parents, and everyone else.

We believe you shouldn’t have to go broke exploring your passions. That’s why we make beginner keyboards that cost less than the average phone bill, but sound like they cost hundreds, if not thousands more.

Sound and Feel

The two most important aspects of any musical instrument are how it sounds, and how it feels to play. This touch-to-sound connection is especially important for a young player. If the instrument doesn’t inspire, it could mean the difference between a protege and a missed opportunity.

Tones and Other Features

While learning music theory, we often benefit from restrictions. But when we start creating our own music, we benefit from versatility. We need new places to go, new sounds to explore, and useful tools to make the experience fun.

Casiotone keyboards and CDP-S digital pianos are an ideal combination of what you need to get started, what you’ll need as you keep learning, and what you don’t even realize you’ll want down the road. With tools like accompaniment Rhythms, sampling and recording, the right Casiotone can be both a perfect beginner keyboard and an inspiring musical partner for years to come.

Design

That said, having too many buttons in front of you while you’re learning can be distracting, especially for younger players. Our newest Casiotones and CDP-S beginner keyboards have ingeniously-designed interfaces that present you with both exactly what you need at a given time, and easy ways to get anywhere else. Fewer buttons doesn’t always mean less to do.

Some of our instruments are even available in your choice of colors, and all of them have beautiful designs with thoughtful details that stand out and inspire you in ways you might not have expected.

Portability

Thanks to Casio, you can expect a keyboard for beginners that goes anywhere you do, even the ones with 88 weighted keys.

Every Casiotone can run for hours on AA batteries. Most Casiotones weigh under 10 pounds and have carrying handles/grips. Many even have strap pins, so you can connect a guitar strap and play anywhere.

All of our CDP-S models can also run on AA batteries, weigh under 24 pounds, and can be easily worn like a backpack with our optional SC-800 carrying case.

Accessories with Casio Digital Pianos and Keyboards

  • Every Casio instrument with full-size keys comes with an AC adapter and a device-ready music rest (which means it’s designed to hold your phone, tablet, or e-reader).
  • Nearly all Casiotone, CDP-S and Privia instruments can also run for hours on optional AA batteries.
  • Each Casio 88-note keyboard (CDP-S, Privia) also ships with an SP-3 sustain pedal..

There are a few things you can add to improve the experience.

A portable keyboard stand. We offer adjustable X-style keyboard stands that are capable of holding over 300lbs- That’s about 30 times the weight of your average Casiotone.

A digital piano stand. Casio makes beautiful and sturdy matching wooden stands for CDP-S and Privia that match the style of your piano and place it at the correct playing height.

A piano-like sustain pedal. The Casio SP-20 sustain pedal is an upgrade for the SP-3 pedal included with your 88-key digital piano. The SP-20 reproduces the feel of a full size grand piano pedal in a portable and reliable format.

A portable three-pedal unit. The Casio SP-34 reproduces the feel and response of all three pedals you’d find on a traditional grand piano, including half-dampering capability for nuanced expression. Beginning with the CDP-S160, the SP-34 is compatible with every CDP-S and Privia PX-S model.

A carrying case. For Casiotone models, our SC-650 case offers excellent weather protection and backpack-like convenience. You can also wear many CDP-S and PX-S models as backpacks with our SC-800 case, which also includes a shoulder strap and accessory pockets. The PX-S6000 and PX-S7000 have their own form-fitting SC-800 case to tote our most advanced Privias to date.
