Made in Japan

Bringing the traditional Japanese art of lacquerware to the calculator.

Japanese lacquerware is a traditional craft that combines a deep luster with translucency.
Inspired by this tradition, master artisans from Yamakyu Japanware—a long-established Echizen lacquerware maker—painstakingly apply layers of Japanese lacquer to each calculator.
The beautiful bodies of these calculators were individually crafted at the manufacturer’s workshop
in the city of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture.
The deep, rich luster and dignified presence radiate a brilliance worthy of being called a true work of art.

High-quality Japanese lacquer, meticulously crafted by master artisans.

Lacquer is derived from the natural sap of lacquer trees. For the S100X Japanese Lacquer Edition, the sap is filtered to remove impurities and used as the base for a technique called tame-nuri, which creates a translucent effect on areas where the lacquer layer is thin, such as the edges. The entire process—including drying and maintaining this level of quality demands exceptional skill honed through years of experience and intuition.

Yamakyu Japanware

Based in the city of Sabae in Fukui Prefecture, Yamakyu Japanware is a manufacturer of Echizen lacquerware with a history spanning about 95 years from its establishment in 1930.
The company has preserved traditional lacquerware techniques for generations while actively developing a diverse range of products to meet modern needs. As a leading maker in the Echizen lacquerware region, Yamakyu Japanware continues to explore new possibilities for Japanese lacquer.

An exceptional creation infused with the craftsmanship and pride of artisans.

“Japanese lacquer has long been treasured as a versatile material, used not only for fine tableware, but also for the architectural elements of temples and shrines and even for farming tools. While I’ve applied lacquer to wood, glass, and metal before, this project was different—it demanded millimeter-level precision for an industrial product. Achieving consistent quality with manually applied lacquer was an immense challenge. Through countless adjustments, prototypes, and inspections, we refined every detail. This uncompromising pursuit of perfection helped us to succeed, and seeing the finished product filled me with great pride.”
