A Perfect Fit for a Special Space Privia bringing peace and balance.
Brooklyn has been known globally as one of the prominent global creative epicenters for a long time, a place where new trends are born and artists thrive. The neighborhood has drawn musicians, designers and makers together from around the world since the 1990s, thus becoming a global symbol of cultural innovation.
One such person is Federico Rojas Lavado, the owner of record store Second Hand Records NYC which he opened in 2016. Federico was born in Venezuela but raised in Brooklyn and therefore has a deep-rooted love for the energy and spirit of the city.
“I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else,” he says. “Brooklyn feels like home. It’s filled with creative people and an incredible youthful energy which I’ve always felt drawn to.”
Both of Federico’s parents were artists so his childhood surrounded by art and creativity; Federico says this background made opening a record store a natural path.
“I’ve always chased things that bring me joy and make me happy. Music brings me joy and it’s a big source of inspiration.”
The walls inside the store are lined with vinyl records and amongst that sits a Privia piano—one of Federico’s personal favorite items.
“There’s so many things that I love about the Privia, but above all the compact size fits perfectly in this space. Making the most of small spaces is essential here in New York.”
The shop has large windows making it a bright and inviting space, with greenery adding a sense of warmth. Federico says that the piano has become an essential part of that environment.
“A lot of people around here love music and also play instruments. I’ve always been interested in learning to play music, so I recently started practicing.”
Situated in the midst of Brooklyn’s vibrant chaos, Federico’s store is more than just a place of business, it’s his sanctuary.
“Of course this is where I work but it means something deeper too, something I can’t quite put into words. It gives me a sense of calm, and the Privia fits right in with that. This is the space where I feel most at peace.”
