An Aqua Planet collaborative watch, expressing an ongoing commitment to coral preservation
BABY-G has been supporting Aqua Planet’s efforts since 2018. In that same year, we launched onsite projects designed to preserve coral reefs, such as establishing a coral field off Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture. This latest collaborative model is inspired by the Acropora nana coral cultivated at the Casio coral field. The charming sight of the coral as it grows rapidly in the pristine waters is an integral part of the watch’s design.

AQUA PLANET
A non-profit organisation dedicated to conserving coral reefs. Led by the actor Ritsuko Tanaka, who serves as president, the organisation is engaged in several collaborative conservation efforts including transplanting coral in Chatan (on Okinawa’s main island) and cultivating coral on the island of Ishigaki.
Casio Coral Field
When Casio started providing support to Aqua Planet in January 2018, the company also established a coral field in the sea off Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture, planting 200 coral “seedlings” in hopes that they would reproduce in three years’ time. The Casio coral field lies in the shallow waters off Ishigaki’s southern coast, where the sea is only 4 metres deep at high tide. The coral coexists with a phytoplankton called zooxanthellae, and coral seedlings from more than seven resilient varieties were planted, including Acropora muricata. Now, over five years after planting, tiny fish swim among the mature coral as it continues to grow.

On creating the illustrations
I’ve always loved the sea, so I really had a great time working on this artwork. I tried to express an undersea world teeming with life, like the Acropora nana coral and whitetail dascyllus fish, which are featured as the watch’s design motifs. I would be delighted if these illustrations give people a sense of how beautiful the marine realm can be and inspire them with positivity.
