Converting Light from Fluorescent Lamps and More

The original Casio solar-charging system reduces the need for regular battery replacement

Gallium Tough Solar module: 2–5 times more efficient charging with significantly smaller solar cells

The newly developed Gallium Tough Solar charging system delivers greater durability under high-intensity lighting than conventional systems, as well as enhanced charging efficiency. When charging with sunlight in outdoor settings in clear weather (approx. 50,000 Lx), it offers charging efficiency about five times that of the previous system, and in indoor light (approx. 500 Lx), about double.* This enhanced efficiency, in turn, enables the solar module to be considerably smaller. The light shining through the cut-out gaps in the date disc is plenty to power the OCW-SG1000ZE-1A with solar energy alone.

Gallium Tough Solar

Gallium Tough Solar is a new solar module that represents a further advancement in the Casio Tough Solar charging system. It adapts Sharp’s gallium-based solar charging technology, which features a power-generating layer made with a gallium compound. Originally incorporated in the small SLIM lunar probe developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), which made Japan’s first moon landing in 2024, this advanced solar cell technology has now been effectively applied to wristwatches. The system not only delivers aerospace-level reliability, but boasts much better power generation efficiency than conventional solar cells. This allows it to use just the light shining through small gaps in the date display to reliably power all the functions, including standard time radio wave reception.

Tough Solar

This original Casio solar-charging system employs solar panels that convert light even from fluorescent lamps and other sources, combined with an internal rechargeable battery. It generates ample power for smooth operation of power-hungry functions, from measurements to radio wave reception, Bluetooth® connectivity, lights, and alarms. Also includes a Power-Saving function that automatically engages when the watch is left for a certain period in a dark location.

Shadow-Dispersing Solar Panel

Ample power for functions such as GPS signal reception is ensured by dispersing the power generation loss due to the shadows of watch hands and so on across multiple solar cells to raise light-reception efficiency. This has also enabled the use of dimensional dials with low light transmissivity and designs with large hands and hour marks.

Solar Charging Through Inset Dials

The solar-receptive area in inset dials alone transmits enough light to power the watch, enabling face design with a greater degree of freedom.

Solar-Assisted Charging
